Cycling Shoes

As well as being more lightweight in construction, road shoes differ from mountain/hybrid shoes in that they have a hard (plastic or carbon) rigid sole with no tread, and a large cleat. This makes them very efficient for pedalling, but very difficult to walk in, so are the best option for pure road riding, but cannot be used off-road, where you may need to walk around.

Conversely mountain/hybrid shoes have a smaller cleat to make room for a tread, and a more flexible sole. This means they can be used off-road, and also make a good option for more relaxed road use, or if you need to be able to walk in them too.
